Mandy's Pic for B&B

Mandy Helwig

For as long as I can remember, I planned on being a teacher. It was always the plan. And I thought 5th or 6th grade would be perfect for me because I loved both my 5th and 6th grade teachers. Throughout high school, I knew I wanted to attend our local university in Pennsylvania, because of its wonderful Elementary Education program, which brought in people from all over the state.

After receiving my degree from Millersville University, I taught a variety of grade levels: preschool, 2nd, 4th, 5th, and 6th. Although I enjoyed parts of each grade level, I began to realize I was made for the younger grades. I love all parts of it: from planning creative lessons that will keep students excited about learning, to finding new ways to integrate subjects, to exposing children to literacy and watching each one flourish and feel successful, and I began to work on a Master’s in Early Childhood Education.

After eight years of teaching, I made the bittersweet decision to stay home with our two young boys. I have continued to fulfill my love for teaching little ones. I regularly plan and implement units at home with my children. I also began a lesson time for children ages two to three as part of a homeschool group, as well as tutored a young reader. Now I feel it is the time to get back into the classroom and I am very excited to be joining the staff at Bullfrogs and Butterflies as the Kindergarten teacher. I have so much planned, and I can’t wait to get started!
